Brian and Karen Meyer in Highland Park in Pittsburgh planned to take their daughters to Disney World as a Memorial Day vacation.
The family could have driven about 25 miles from their Allegheny County home to Pittsburgh International Airport in Findlay. Instead, they opted to drive 41 miles east to Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Westmoreland County so they could save a big chunk of money on airfare by flying discount carrier Spirit Airlines.
"It offers a great rate and much better parking. It was $500 cheaper (for airfare) and free parking for a week," Brian Meyer said.
The Meyers are among a growing number of passengers who are willing to drive a greater distance to the Unity airport for the discounted fares that Spirit Airlines offers for daily flights to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, as well as seasonal flights to Myrtle Beach, S.C.
