Spanair Out of Business After Qatar Rescue Talks Fail - NYCAviation


Just hours after Qatar Airways backed out of talks to rescue struggling Spanair, the Barcelona-based carrier was reported to have halted operations.

Founded in 1986, Spanair flew operated a fleet of 29 Airbus A320-family and McDonnell Douglas MD-80-family aircraft. Destinations were mostly within Europe and north Africa.

The airline had been on shaky financial ground for several months before reports emerged of a possible rescue plane from Qatar Airways which may have involved cash or aircraft. Spanair was majority-owned by the Catalan government, with Scandinavian Air Systems holding a minority stake.

According to preferente.com, Spanair employees had already begun reaccommodating passengers on other airlines. The Spanair website was not functioning at the time this story was published.
